This class of grade 3’s were asked to divide thier canvases into 9 even blocks either verticaly or diagonally.

They drew thier self-portrait (using mirrors) in the middle with kokki and left it as a line drawing.

Four of the outer “squares” were each given a letter from their name while the other squares were given nguni symbols which they chose to represent thier lives.  The outside of the letters were frottaged and inked newsprint collaged with gold paper collaged inside the letters.  The symbols were painted with acrylic paint and ink.

All in all in took a long time to complete but so beatiful in the end and they were so proud of them.

Have you got any canvas goldens.  Visit Mrs Teacher for some more ideas on canvas.
