There are only a few rules:

compound eyes, 6 legs coming from the thorax, a head, an abdomen and antennae

The rest is up to the children.  They can name the insect and add to the insect as they please.  They can create a fighting insect, a moving insect, flying insect…. what ever they can create they can make.

I provided egg boxes, toilet rolls, easy to bend wire, fishing gut, wire cutters, pliers, scrap paper and a polystyrene dish.  It was so unfortunate that the children mostly forgot to bring their own rubbish.  The two girls who did bring their own rubbish made very interesting and colourful insects. So proud.

Rather noisy project with the hammer though!!!! – I provided the hammer and sharp pointy things to allow the kids to make holes where it was difficult.
